"Sekimori Stone" ishimusubishi (large)

Hinoe creates works using rice straw and rush grass. Based in Okayama, every step of the process—from rice planting and harvesting to drying and rope-twisting—is carried out carefully by hand, using pesticide-free methods.
For this piece, various stones in different shapes and sizes selected by Landscipe were paired with knots created intuitively by Hinoe, each finished according to their own sensibility.

About Sekimori-ishi

Sekimori-ishi is a small stone traditionally placed at forked paths of stepping stones or paved walkways in tea gardens and roji (tea paths). It is bound crosswise with warabi straw rope or palm fiber rope.
In the etiquette of the tea ceremony, the presence of this stone signifies, “Please refrain from entering beyond this point.”
Rather than using explicit words, it creates an ambiguous boundary through its mere presence—a subtle expression of the Japanese aesthetic.

The knotting materials are made from delicate natural plant fibers and bark. When moving the piece, please hold the stone itself rather than the tied fibers.
