Akatsu Garden House

Since it’s hard to get a glimpse of what’s inside, private residences are like oases in the city. I was struck first by the discovery that such a tranquil haven still exists in the heart of Nagoya.
At the center of the garden lies the remnant of a pond, which must have shimmered with koi-fish in the previous generations.
Today, the garden’s keeper has transformed it into a tapestry of flowers—hyacinth orchids, peonies, irises, and tree peonies—flourishes through the four seasons.
The greenery speaks of their owner’s affection for the garden.
A garden that continues to thrive is more than one simply maintained.
It is an act of creation—honoring the vision of its original maker while finding joy in the present.
With this renovation, this site has become not only the family’s garden but also a shared space for the residents of the apartment complex.
As life and surroundings change, it must have become what best suits to this place.
It was possible because the garden was placed at the center of the project, through the unity of the client, the architect, and the landscape designer.
This occasion also marked the moment when the family torch was passed from the parents to their daughter.
I look forward to seeing how she will nurture this place in her own way.
