Niwa of Moriga-Oka

The garden is situated in an old residential area, built on a complex terrain with many undulations.

While the town was being renewed through generational change and redevelopment, the garden was landscaped by retaining the slopes with organic materials.

Inorganic materials like concrete may appear robust and universal at first glance, yet they inevitably deteriorate over time.

On the other hand, organic matter seems fragile and decompose easily, but this very impermanence enables continuous adaptation to a better environment.

With continued human care and repair, it gradually integrates with nature and settles into stability.

Creating a “Niwa” through human involvement means nurturing the natural environment by encouraging its changes and tending to it.

A garden in which the natural environment has found stability is both beautiful and cozy.

The garden seems unlikely to ever reach a state of “completion” or “fixed form”, yet our first aim is to bring stability to its environment.
